A Clinical Trial of Sulbactam/Ampicillin in the Treatment of Respiratory Tract Infection and Urinary Tract Infection in Adults




Abstract
To establish the safety and the efficacy of Sulbactam/Ampicillin, 30 patients with respiratory tract infection and with urinary tract infection were treated as in-patient status. The drug was given I vial (0.5g Sulbactam plus 1.0g Ampicillin) two timesdaily by intravenous route for 7 days or more.
-The clinical efficacy was noted 80% -success i n respiratory tract infection and 67% in urinary tract infection. The organisms isolated from the patients¢¥ . cultures were sensitive to Sulbactam/Ampicillin as follows: 6 of 7 with streptococci (including p-Hemolitic streptococcus Grour-A), 4 of 4 with staphylococci, 9 of 12 with E. coli, 2 of 5 with Klebsiella species, I of 1 with alcaligenes species, 0 of i citrobactor species. The overall response rate was 80% in respiratory tract infection and 66% in urinary tract infection. No significant side reaction which caused the withdrawal of administration the drug was noticed and the only laboratory abnormality was noted transient elevation of hepatic enzyme (SGOT, SGPT) in one case.
